Sparta's supposed fighting prowess is built largely on propaganda, rather than actual battlefield successes. Their reputation was built during a fairly short period in the 5th century BCE, and even then covered with all sorts of caveats, "In a fair fight," "if not outnumbered," "if nothing else goes wrong," and then those caveats themselves were proven hollow in the 4th century BCE.

And a severe lack of sources too. There are entire battles that the Spartans supposedly won, that might not even have happened.
