It's pretty easy to understand, honestly. It's because they've been told over and over and over, since they were in the crib and forevermore between themselves as adults, that the south is their heritage, and the 'south will rise again,' and that blacks/hispanics/asians/anything-else-they-can-blame-aside-from-themselves is the reason that their region/city/state is doing so poorly.
That's the reason for the confederacy, anyway. The nazi thing is white nationalism, pure and simple. Get a bunch of scared*, young, impressionable white teens, and tell them their world is going to be horrible, and it's all because of [repeat statement of blacks/hispanics/asians/etc above], and that 'their brothers' need their help, and they can see everything they love be amazing once again** if only they hurt [repeat statement again].
*because let's face it, most rural areas it sucks to grow up and try to make a living in, and they're sort of right to be scared that they won't be able to support a family, and supporting themselves alone is almost as horrific (and nearly impossible as well) since we've made isolation commonplace.
**once again being some weird throwback to what they thought things were like as kids
It still doesn't make it easy to understand. My grandad spouted this nonsense. It was easy to refute from my own experiences and conclusions, even as a child. Why so many with functioning brains just say "naw, I must be wrong, racist old people must be right" still makes no sense.
