The two big affiliate companies refused to air it on TV.
If it's big enough news the other % will see it. We live in multimedia age afterall.

I thought it started with his firing? It didn't seem like a show buildup at all. Just bam he's fired.

They're trying to get the right to own a higher percentage of local syndicate markets than is legal.
Edit: That article doesn't really get into it but Nextsar was the first to take Kimmel off the air before dit was ABC-wide.
