No shit. That's what the west/NATO/the EU should have done from the start when Russia invaded back in 2014... and when they invaded again in 2022...

The wests response to Ukraine for the last decade has been ineffectual and generally pathetic

Which is dumb as hell even if you only look at it for selfish reasons. Most of the high technology manufactuing and design for the soviet union was there, they had shipyards, port access, minerals, and the knowledge to use them IN ADDITION to not wanting anything to do with the soviets anymore. It should have been a no-brainer to foster that relationship and protect them with more than a paper agreement.
