Piefed.ca shows All posts by default, to anyone including guests without an account, whereas Lemmy.ca's default was to show only Local - the latter was a huge blocker, so that having changed now on their piefed instance makes all the difference?
I could see promoting lemmy.zip with a warning, similar to how you sometimes used to do with lemm.ee iirc, citing how it did not make moderation choices for the user unlike Reddit. But for a mainstream normie I would avoid it, or again at least put in a word of caution to explain.
PieFed.ca and Lemmy.ca are targeted for Canadian people, it's in the name, the logos, everything. Using that as a default recommendation would bring a lot of non Canadians to those instances, which would dilute the sense of community those instances have, and would be met with hesitation by potential new joiners "I'm not Canadian, why would I join here, isn't there a more generic instance"?
As far as I know, there's no alternative for a reliable EU hosted Piefed reliable instance, so until one shows up, I'm going to stick to piefed.zip
What about PieFed.social? I keep thinking of it as a more experimental instance, but while it may receive updates before any of the others it was you iirc who pointed out to me that it is no longer used as the "test" instance anymore. It defederates from both of those. I forget where it is located though?
I try to not recommend the flagship instance. Not sure about where it's hosted.
But in this case PieFed is so new, it doesn't have anywhere close to the same mod issues as PieFed.World, and if there are no better options... it could be the best among the available choices?
