Basically Kirk was MAGA, the shooter was from a group called 'groypers' led by Nick Fuentes. There's an online meme 'persona' of sorts called Pepe, who I guess the groypers use as a mascot. Which is a shame as some of the Pepe content is pretty awesome. It's the punisher skull shit all over again. Anyway, infighting between facist groups, groypers being the more extreme far right group, which I didn't think was possible but here we are.
It's so true. Conservatives are so uncreative that they miss the most basic elements of storytelling that most of us grasp as children.
They haven't made anything creative of their own since the swastika, and even that was stolen from Hindus. All they do is take take take, and then ruin everything they fucking touch.
They adopted Pepe?
That's a shame. It was a good meme there for a while. I had no idea that it was being tied to racist bullshit.

To be fair, I don't seem to encounter a lot of racists, because I usually actively avoid them, and I also really haven't used Pepe very much either.
There's no lack of memes to replace Pepe, so I'm mostly unbothered by all of this.
I've been on the Internet too long to bother with every nuance of everything that's going on. There's way too much on here for me to care.
Honestly you're not alone. This is the first I've heard to any extent that Pepe was used by racists at all. I've seen some pretty heartfelt animations using the likeness and no hint to any extent that racism was somehow attached to it.

Maybe I'm not chronically online enough or in whatever channels where whatever you're talking about is going on as I'm not even sure where it is I would go to 'go back and look'. Are there like entire communities sharing pepe memes or something?
Pepe being a right wing meme is actually something that's been going back over a decade now. Literally, it got so bad it was branded a hate symbol in 2016. There have been multiple news reports, documentaries, you name it. It has been completely co-opted and associated with the far right for that long.

Yeah. I figured as much. There's still a lot of lurkers on Lemmy, and I assume that at least some of them have seen the comments and agreed at some extent.
Though, someone seems to be down voting comments around here. I dunno, I'm just some dude.
I've noticed a lot more down votes lately and I have no idea why. I still couldn't give any less of a shit if I'm down voted or not, it's just an interesting trend for my brain to look at.

Pepe is actually a reclaimed racist meme. Most of this 4chan racism about the frog is from 2016 or so. If you're ever on twitch, you'll see it all over the place because it's a huge part of their culture.
Weird. I spend a nontrivial amount of time on Twitch and I don't see that at all.
I'm speaking particularly of chat emotes. I still see it all the time, but it may vary by channel.
That's fair. Chat emotes can vary wildly from streamer to streamer.
