Could they not have had a common housing at the back of the barrels that held all the powder and ignited with one fuse?

Or just used 1 barrel, chain shot was already a thing and worked fine with single barelled cannons.

I don’t think that would fix the problem though. You’d still need each cannonball and barrels to be perfectly matched and it’s probably much harder to cast.
