Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I'm pretty sure he has no great love for fascists.

The checklist is cute but it's wrong.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 27 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

The fascist thing on the bullets is a direct reference to Helldivers 2 which is a canonically Starship Troopers (the movie) style universe where the fascists who run Super Earth refer to themselves as a democracy while calling their enemies fascist.

This one could go either way, honestly.

[–] WolfLink@sh.itjust.works 26 points 4 days ago

Helldivers 2 is an anti-fascist game, but because you play as the baddies, not everyone has the media literacy to understand that.

[–] GongFuFlashSteep@slrpnk.net 12 points 4 days ago (3 children)

He had Bella Ciao on one casing. That's an antifascist anthem.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 21 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

There is also some evidence that Bella Ciao was being used as an inside joke style meme by the Nick Fuentes-related groypers.

Once again, inconclusive.

someone on bsky also posted that it's on the groyper playlist

It's a HOI4 meme. Just like the Helldivers reference, it's just terminally online gamer shit.

[–] stray@pawb.social 5 points 4 days ago

I think its origins probably matter less than it being the La Casa de Papel song. Like how Guy Fawkes is a really cool anti-establishment hero.

[–] forrgott@lemmy.zip 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You seem to have a rather binary world view. The world is not black and white; anybody who fails to move past such a juvenile perspective is part of the problem.

In other words, your over simplification is not cute, and is also wrong.

[–] ExtremeDullard@piefed.social 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The kid reportedly left a bullet casing with "Hey fascist! Catch!" engraved on it, and he killed a fascist.

I don't really know what kind of nuance you want me to display here. It's pretty black and white: the kid was 200% antifa and the checklist is factually wrong.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 38 points 4 days ago (2 children)

That's a Helldivers 2 reference actually, because right after that quote is a code for a bomb drop from the game.

Helldivers 2 is a Starship Troopers style universe where clearly you work for the bad guys and the bad guys call their enemies fascists.

So it's not clearly anti-fascist as much as it is internet edgelord.

[–] ExtremeDullard@piefed.social 14 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Okay, I admit I'm ignorant of modern internet and gaming lore.

But what do you make of the fact that he shot a fucking fascist? That's not a video game reference now, is it?

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I can't make anything of it because some Mormons are more extreme right wing than the Republican party, and there's a possibility he was attacking from that angle.

[–] ExtremeDullard@piefed.social 5 points 4 days ago (3 children)

That's true. I lived in Utah, so I know.

The thing is though, I've never met a Mormon more extreme than that hateful kid Charlie Kirk. He wasn't a republican, he was a full-on MAGA of the most extreme right-wing variety, so I can't really conceive of anybody even more extreme than him who might think he didn't go far enough to the right enough to gun him down.

But hey, anything is possible in this nauseating world of extremist morons I guess...

[–] AndiHutch@lemmy.zip 13 points 4 days ago

Look up (or don't) Groypers and Nick Fuentes. Believe it or not there was some controversy over how Kirk messaged the Epstein Files that Fuentes and his followers are drumming up. Like Flickerman posted in another comment in this post, apparently they are trying to co-opt the use of the song Bella Ciao like the right does with left-wing things that get popular. One of the bullets had that etched in it. I hadn't heard of any of this either before today, but it is not at all out of character for fascists to infight.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Yep, and it all adds up to we can't really say one way or the other based on vague memelord statements which may or may not actually be real anyway. After it's become increasingly clear that Luigi is quite likely a patsy who had stuff planted on him, I have a hard time trusting that this is really the guy anyway or trusting any statements the media makes on him until we know more through things like court discovery.

[–] chaos@beehaw.org 5 points 4 days ago

If you go even further right than Charlie Kirk, they end up flipping from "yay Israel, help bring about the Book of Revelations and end the world" to "boo Israel, we hate Jews", so as hard as it may be to believe, there is actually room for him to get hated from his right.

[–] How_do_I_computah@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

The quote is not from the game though. Just the bomb drop code.
