Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

The other inscriptions on the fired casings:

“notices bulges”

capital “O-W-O what’s this?”

Inscriptions on the three unfired casings:

“hey fascist!” “catch!” Up arrow symbol, right arrow symbol, and three down arrow symbols.

“Oh Bella Ciao, Bella Ciao, Bella Ciao, Ciao, Ciao.”

“If you read this, you are gay LMAO.”

Also:

A Wall Street Journal report, citing an ATF bulletin, had previously said the casings were “engraved with expressions of transgender and antifascist ideology.” The purported transgender symbols were later understood to relate to markings identifying the manufacturer.

This says that the "sequence of arrows" was interpreted as a transgender symbol.

Now we know that the sequence of arrows was "up, right, down, down, down"

...that's the strategem code for the 500kg bomb in helldivers 2.

The ATF interpreted a video game reference as a transgender symbol...

Edit: another claim I'm seeing, quote from snopes:

Some users online claimed officials had misinterpreted "TRN," an engraving found on ammunition produced by Turan Ammunition, a Turkish company, as "transgender ideology."

This is a more logical mistake to make but is also an embarrassing and irresponsible mistake from the ATF if true.

Ah and here I was hoping for the konami code

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago

Yeah, missed opportunity but hey. Kids have their own things.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago

The ATF interpreted

the atf interpreted a 14 inch shoelace with a loop in it as an automatic rifle. they can suck any one of my defective buttholes

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I'm surprised they didn't interpret the three arrows as antifa, they're so fucking incompetent.

[–] OboTheHobo@ttrpg.network 8 points 6 months ago

I mean I could almost see that? Helldivers is kinda a satire on the american brand of fascism so it could be argued its an anti-fascist peace of media. But that's a stretch to say the least.

But my real issue with this is that federal investigators saw something they had absolutely no clue what it is and called it a transgender symbol. Its an incredible amount of bias in a particularly very bigoted way.

Reminds me of a lyric from The Clash - "taking off his turban, they said, 'is this man a jew?'" They see something unknown to them and just assign it to the marginalized group they have a preconceived notion of being bad.

embarrassing and irresponsible mistake from the ATF

Oh that's kinda been their MO for as long as I can remember. It's kinda their motto. Instead of educating anyone, they routinely do things like try to preach the horrific danger of detachable magazines as the dork tries to insert it backwards.

It's also a straight up meme that they'll conduct some half assed raid where they shoot someone's dog and go "Whoops. Wrong address."

They know less about firearms than your average airsofter or tactical gamer, but they're an authoritarian arm on "regulating" the things so they're usually the first to jump to wild, illiterate conclusions.

I think socialist gun owners and insufferably right wing gun nuts could probably high five over beers when it comes to their mutual sheer lack of respect for the ATF. Lol

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 8 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Sorry, there were multiple fired casings?

[–] Makhno@lemmy.world 6 points 6 months ago (1 children)

They found the gun, no? So maybe they found the ammo as well

[–] Gerblat@lemmy.world 11 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Right, but this says “fired casings” as in multiple fired casings. Wasn’t there only one shot fired?

[–] gdog05@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago

As I understand it's actually three unfired casings.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago

Just one fired casing, three unfired per the article.

[–] TheTetrapod@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago

Is it at all possible that they were interpreting the "bulges" thing as trans related? Not to say that it is, but it seems more likely than the TRN thing.
