Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Please note that NSFW/NSFL videos must be labeled as such or they will be deleted

Edit: also keep in mind that initial information in these situations can often be inaccurate. Trusted outlets have conflicting reports about whether a suspect has been detained.

Edit 2: the campus has officially stated they release the initial subject. Donald Trump has stated Charlie Kirk is dead.

Also, uh, if you have any doubt in your fortitude whatsoever, do not watch them.

Seriously.

For anyone who is curious but might not want to watch the video, here’s a description I found that a friend of mine who watched it says is accurate:

Descriptionhe got shot in the neck by a high powered rifle and instantly litres of blood spewed out as he slumped over. He likely won't survive.

Dude could have fell off his seat and onto a trauma operating table and still died.

Yep yep yep this x100, if you have PTSD or just have never seen or cannot handle extreme gore, probably actually do not watch the clip.

This is an extremely legitimately trigger warning worthy video clip.

[–] Jolly_Platypus@lemmy.world 26 points 5 months ago

Ya, the video is grim. Seriously doubt he survived.

[–] yukichigai@lemmy.sdf.org 20 points 5 months ago (12 children)

For anyone wondering: it's not gory as such, but it is significant in that way that tells our lizard brains something undeniably bad just happened.

You may want this page - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_of_Charlie_Kirk

There are already 23 references to news articles and social media posts on there last I checked

The timing of the shot is wild:

He was specifically asked a question regarding if he knew of any mass shootings involving a transgender shooter. Before he could answer, he was shot.

I wonder if the shooter was able to hear what was being said.

[–] kboy101222@sh.itjust.works 21 points 5 months ago (1 children)

They were reported as being on a building 200 yards away, so unless those speakers were booming, I doubt it

[–] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 5 months ago (1 children)

180m is not thaat far considering the furthest attendees were probably like 50m away.

[–] kboy101222@sh.itjust.works 19 points 5 months ago (7 children)

Yeah, but 200 yards to make a clean shot straight through his artery while he's under a tent is some sniper shit

when i see expert work in my field i have to admire it even when it's a crime. like, when i was in finance and a particularly creative fraud would make the news we'd all go to the break room and talk about the accused's chutzpah and take turns saying what we'd change to get away with it, and how we'd get caught in an audit (all but one of us worked at the IRS for a spell), and so on for about an hour. it was a great thought exercise, kept our brains active and helped keep us current with caselaw.

likewise, though grievous bodily harm was inflicted, that's a remarkable shot.

I like how every news outlet says "GRAPHIC WARNING", then proceeds to blur it anyways. Like... wtf is the point? Can't even find a link lol
