Jonathan Braun had been accused of menacing a hospital nurse and a fellow synagogue member on two separate incidents, as well as of groping his family's nanny and evading bridge tolls.

A convicted New York drug dealer whose federal prison sentence was commuted by President Donald Trump has been found guilty of violating the terms of his release after being arrested and charged in connection with several recent crimes.

Jonathan Braun now faces up to five years in prison when he's sentenced Oct. 9.

The Long Island resident had been accused of menacing a hospital nurse and a fellow synagogue member on two separate incidents, as well as of groping his family's nanny and evading bridge tolls.

Braun had been a high-ranking member of an international group that smuggled more than 220,460 pounds of marijuana from Canada into the United States, federal prosecutors said at the time.

Why are you doing this when it's legal in both Canada and a bunch of US states? There are so many ways to do the weed thing legally and you're still risking international drug charges?

Also funny that if you're brown and (allegedly) smuggle drugs, Trump will just blow up your boat, if you're white you get a pardon.

[–] mean_bean279@lemmy.world 55 points 1 week ago (3 children)

What’s fucking really stupid is that trump ruined our relationship with Canada because they were “bringing drugs” into our country and he just fucking pardons the legit guy doing it.

How the fuck can he always do the opposite of what’s right?

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 24 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The fentanyl thing is just him setting his excuse for his attempt to take over

[–] DeathsEmbrace@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

I think the reality was the opposite and that unfortunately Canadas #1 supplier is the USA so actually just projection.

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Trump is the manifestation of banal evil.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

manifestation, of the grease in every mcdonalds, turned sentient.

Because he wants Canada and Greenland to be part of his US kingdom or Russia. Drugs were always bullshit.

[–] XeroxCool@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Why are you doing this when it's legal in both Canada and a bunch of US states?

Because regardless of selective legality, there's still taxes, registration, regulation, and other barriers to profit. I know tons of people that hate store-bought weed and continue to buy from their old dealers. Cheaper, their strain, and no paper trail. It's still illegal at the US federal level so we can't know if a current regime will suddenly make it a national crisis and bring a crackdown

[–] ubergeek@lemmy.today 4 points 1 week ago

Except, in those legal states, they've stopped cracking down on grow ops, so you still don't need to risk an international charge just for weed. Buy local!

just for the record... it's not legal anywhere in the US. many states have decriminalized it- whihc means they're not actively enforcing the US law, but it's still very much illegal. In the past it wasn't such a big deal, because federal law enforcement didn't care about people smoking a joint. with trump in power, though, you gotta be careful with that.

[–] socphoenix@midwest.social 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

While you are right on the federal level, you are wrong on the state level. Colorado did legalize it, from their own website:

Retail cannabis is legal in Colorado

See: Colorado.gov

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 5 points 1 week ago

There's the selectively enforcement of the Supremacy Clause (which takes on a much more grim connotation, now).

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world -3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It’s still illegal in Colorado.

Because Colorado is a us state, subject to the laws of the US and weed is illegal federally.

You see how that works, right?

[–] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago

Even if your assessment here were accurate, that still doesn't make weed "decriminalized" in states. Here in Oregon, we voted to decriminalize most drugs in 2020 but they were still illegal to sell and you could still get a ticket for having them. There was just no jail time attached to the penalty.

Contrast that with weed which is legal meaning there are no tickets or penalties for possessing or selling it (provided you do so within state regulations) and it should be easy for you to see how that works, right?

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

And yet anyone over 21 in Colorado can walk down the street, into a store, and buy weed.

So it sounds de facto legal to me.

[–] Breezy@lemmy.world -2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I am only a few clicks away from downloading the newest movie in theaters to my computer and watching it on my tv. Just because ease of access makes it available, it doesn't make it technically legal though.

[–] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago

It does if those sites you're downloading those movies from are licensed, regulated, and approved by your state, which is the case with weed in places where it's legal. This entire argument is nonsense.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Look up what "de facto" means. It's absolutely de facto legal to consume cannabis in legal states.

Until the feds start busting individual users smoking a joint in their home, that will continue to be the case.

[–] Breezy@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

"Untill"

You know its not really legal when its a state law vs federal law. People need to push for it being legalized. All pussy footing around its just plain stupid when both sides agree, pot good.

[–] jonne 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Evidently he's fine with it as long as you cut him a cheque.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Most of us can’t afford that check.

[–] jonne 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If you smuggle millions worth of drugs you will be able to afford it.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

not if you get caught before you can sell the first haul.
