Fun time to remind people, you used to be able to buy Laudanum over-the-counter. For those who don't know their classical medicine, or only recognize it from Amnesia: The Dark Descent, it's typically 10% OPIUM per bottle.

Fun Fact: It was cheaper than liquor for a time, despite being a mixture of alcohol and opium, because it was classified as a medicine and exempt from a punitive liquor tax.

... this led to an explosion in laudanum abuse in Britain.

Sounds similar to the situation in Northern Europe: alcohol is taxed like crazy, it is much cheaper to get a prescription drug.

Well it would treat pretty much every symptom I guess. With a slight side effect of opioid addiction, no biggie right?
