General community for news/discussion in the UK.

Less serious posts should go in !casualuk@feddit.uk or !andfinally@feddit.uk
More serious politics should go in !uk_politics@feddit.uk.

Try not to spam the same link to multiple feddit.uk communities.
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric news, and should be either a link to a reputable source, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread.

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

And there's the switch from this is a bit of flag waving patriotism to outright racism

It's always been about racism

Do you mean flag waving is always about racism?

[–] blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, pretty much.

With the St Georges Cross it seems to be the case.

See other flags of the world being flown and it just looks like they're being patriotic, but with the England flag it just seems it symbolises something darker.

Not sure why, mebbies it's just me?

If the black areas of things were marked with a white cross to emulate the Cornish flag, would it be the same?

Depends how many teeth the flag waver has

Tl;Dr the rise of nationalism coincided with the rise of the modern concepts of race and are innately connected. Flags as the primary symbols of national identity developed along with nationalism.

Nationalism as a concept is capable of being separated from racism but the roots are undeniable.

That's not what they said though. They said the conspicuous patriotism was always a cover for the racism.

Yeah, because prior to this incident everyone involved was a peaceful patriot and not a mouth breathing reform voting racist.
