As far as I know Southern Europe does have a siesta culture. Northern Europe however does not, at least not the parts I have been.

Siesta is a Spanish word and in Europe, a midday nap/siesta is most commonly associated with Spain AFAIK.

That is true. Spain and Italy for sure do

I would guess part of it would be tied to the history of the industrial revolution starting jn England and Germany but probably not the whole story

The reason that I am told is that it's just way to hot during the midday to do anything productive, so you just take a two hour break during the warmest part of the day. But there's probably more to it than just that.
