Chinese characters are composed of radicals (smaller parts that combine to form a complete character).

What you’re forgetting isn’t the character, but how to “spell” the character. And years of typing and spell check and autocorrect have destroyed my ability to write by pen, even in my native language (English), so I’m not surprised it happens in ideographic writing.

I’ve also noticed that speaking and writing are slowly merging while typing. The number of times I’ve written “won” instead of “one” or confused your/you’re is embarrassing. I find my fingers are making the sounds, not the words, of what I’m trying to type.
