Documenting hate speech, conspiracy theories, apologia/revisionism, and general tankie behaviour across the fediverse. Memes are welcome!

What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post as opposed to arguing.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

Lemmy is wonderful software. The metaphorical artist leaves much to be desired.

The piefed user experience has been far superior so far. And less "baggage" for now.

[–] mitch@piefed.mitch.science 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I run a single-user PieFed instance and am happy as a clam with it.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

How much data transfer per month does that use these days?

[–] mitch@piefed.mitch.science 4 points 1 day ago

Judging by what little I have at my disposal (my Proxmox summary), netin is the lion’s share of it.

Here is a clip for you:

How mature is the platform? ~~The last time I looked, they didn’t even have proper version numbers. I don’t see a formal “Join Piefed” prominently displayed in a major top search result. It’s suggested to me that it’s less popular but growing.~~

~~It appears they have such a join page, but it hasn’t worked its way up to the top of my search results just yet.~~

It started of rough. Just like Lemmy. But it's gotten fast patches in the first few days of this server opening to the public. Right now as a user it's pretty transparent coming from Lemmy.

You just have better blocking, better cross posting. Better profiles. Better tags in piefed communities etc. As well as a number of other small things.

The last time I looked, they didn’t even have proper version numbers.

investigates

The bottom of the main page on piefed.social reads:

PieFed v1.1.1 is free and open source.

Their releases page seems to have versions:

https://codeberg.org/rimu/pyfedi/releases

The releases seems to be tagged in their git repository:

https://codeberg.org/rimu/pyfedi/tags

I don’t see a formal “Join Piefed” prominently displayed in a major top search result.

I probably wouldn't search for "join piefed" myself when aiming to use piefed, but okay. I don't know what search engine you're using, but on Kagi, the second result for "join piefed" after PieFed's project page is:

PieFed - Open Source Federated Forum
join.piefed.social

Nope you’re right. I should’ve put more effort into it. I’ll edit it my comment.

There was a release a few days ago which improved things a lot, and they seem to be developing quickly. There are only very few features I'm missing now (e.g. uploading images in replies, but this is coming in the next version).

I prefer how Piefed collates comments from posts on different communities. E.g. see here.

[–] mitch@piefed.mitch.science 7 points 1 day ago

Hmmm. You just reminded me to update, thank you.

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 7 points 1 day ago

Yep. It's great for engagement and discoverability. I wasn't aware of the image upload thing. I tend to link. But great that they are on it.

I'm sure there will be other hurdles down the road for the project. Honestly would be interested to hear from those that admin and host both what their experiences are. That's where a lot of the hitches are going to show.

[–] BagOfHeavyStones@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Images in replies works on Summit for Android when on PieFed.

[–] donuts@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You want a CTA to appear in your search engine before you deem something interesting?

[–] henfredemars 3 points 1 day ago

No not necessarily, but it’s reflective of the maturity and acceptance of a platform. It certainly implies a minimum level of popularity. I would to see platforms achieve that in the hopes that they can really take off with general users.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Piefed looks promising, but who runs it? I can't find any info on where the funding comes from.

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's an open source project hosted on codeberg. Funding ATM seems to be on patreon.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wow, that's even better. I really like their UI and ideals.

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes. I haven't seen any bios of the core developers yet. But they are all set up with the graphs being very promising.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

Well, you can read everything that rimu, the lead dev, posts:

https://piefed.social/u/rimu

[–] floo@retrolemmy.com 3 points 1 day ago

What do you mean by that?
