$35k is barely a poverty wage.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 47 points 2 days ago (3 children)

The pay is closer to $43k. The $35k is a signing bonus.

Plus you get food and board paid for so that's another early 12+K

[–] maximumbird@lemmy.world 25 points 2 days ago (2 children)

IMO still way not worth it to end up working as the US’s Gestapo.

No thanks.

If I'm gonna be working for an evil empire i'd expect evil empire levels of luxury, yeah? The peons never get that though, so that's even more reason to not be interested

Military wouldn't be the equivalent to Gestapo who were the secret police

I'm case you've been living under a rock the past few days, this is what I was referring to: https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/dc-home-rule-act-trump-puts-dc-police/story?id=124548993

[–] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm just explaining that the military isn't equivalent to Gestapo, since Gestapo was the secret police. So you wouldn't be working for America's Gestapo if you joined the military.

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 8 hours ago

The military in the US has basically become militarized police. They are mostly brainwashed crayon-eaters that gargle Trump's balls, so we are all fucked.

The food does come out of your paycheck if you live on base, but it wasn't very much back when I was in. Granted the food was bad too lol

At least when I was in 20 some years ago that was the case. I don't remember how much it was per pay period.

[–] PhilipTheBucket@piefed.social 24 points 2 days ago

The pay is closer to $43k.

Oh, well in that case

43k a year? That's almost 30% more than you'd get in the Netherlands for a minimum wage job where nobody shoots at you.

[–] Honytawk@feddit.nl 1 points 19 hours ago

And in the Netherlands the wages are lower because the cost of living is as well.

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 day ago

So that US salary comes to €36k, €28k I assume you calculate your minimum wage to then? (28 + 30% would be 36.4)

About the same here in the UK, kinda need a reason beyond the money if you are going to join because the money is shit for what you have to do.

[–] Montagge@lemmy.zip 10 points 2 days ago

In 2003 I made about $16k, or about $28.4k today. Shit is wack for multiple reasons.
