leave lots of space between you and an aggressive driver.

This is great advice and a great way of looking at it. I use to tell people that you can control how close other drivers are to you when they are in front of you. A crazy fast tailgater behind you might be hard to deal with, but let them get in front of you and you can have a better safety buffer zone.

Even when your tailgater can't pass you because of traffic, you should still slow down. Not to piss them off, but because they're more likely to run into you and you want as much distance as possible between you and the car in front of you when they do hit you. This is even a question on the CDL exam.
