Dropping the nukes likely saved several million more civilians lives,Imperial Japan was a truly horrific state which genuinely outstripped the third Reich at times in cruelty.

Japan was hanging on to a thread and hoped for the soviets to negotiate a peace. With the threat of Soviet invasion, they would likely have capitulated.
