I like to believe I'm not the only one, so I figured I'd share.
What is split tunneling:
Split tunneling is a computer networking concept which allows a user to access dissimilar security domains like a public network (e.g., the Internet) and a local area network or wide area network at the same time, using the same or different network connections.[1] This connection state is usually facilitated through the simultaneous use of a LAN network interface controller (NIC), radio NIC, Wireless LAN (WLAN) NIC, and VPN client software application without the benefit of an access control.

I typical use case for split tunneling is to access your bank. Split Tunneling will allow you to access your bank with a specific browser without shutting down your VPN for the entire computer. I usually install another browser which is only used for split tunneling and nothing else. My dad forgot to close his vpn once, they locked his account until he called the bank's service centre.
Luckily, my fellow colleague figured how to route through VPN only for given domains (Openforti for Linux), and it's been a lifesaver cuz the VPN is slow AF because all the other people (especially Win users) just use it for all networking.
My workplace learned about split tunneling when COVID hit and suddenly everyone was working from home and doing data intensive Zoom calls via the VPN, just about everything locked up.
What I'm saying is it can also by used to preserve VPN bandwidth for the applications you want/need to have using it.
I thought about split tunneling Signal since all Signal traffic is encrypted.
The ELI5 is that you can specify which traffic does and does not go through the VPN.
