Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Hi Y’all!

So first of this is my fourth attempt at getting into a souls like. Previously have given a go at Elden Ring, Sekiro and Demon Souls, but always bailed or rage quit.

But I just got my hands on Lies of P and recently reached the rabbit siblings and have been dying, replaying and dying, but also progressing.

So I am confused, because I read people say Lies of P is like super punishing and difficult. So does it ramp up at some point or is people just overselling it?

That's fair. I used it a little but wanted to try the weapons the game presents instead. You could argue that the game shouldn't hand it out immediately at the beginning of the game, but then again it also doesn't force it onto you - you're free to switch as you please. If you want to experiment, do that. If you like the weapon and enjoy the moveset, I think you just found a weapon you vibe with and that's fine. I also gravitate towards special myself, so I also don't end up mixing weapons around too much.

I've only played the game back when it was released around 2017 and I don't think we had that back then. But yea, absolutely. Then again, low rank is just that: low rank. You don't want to invest too much time into all kinds of different armours in low rank unless you're enjoying the farming anyway. Once in high rank, there's more of a reason to farm some monsters since it's a bit of step up in difficulty compared to LR. But if you're comfortable playing with that gifted armour up until end-game content, chances are you're likely good enough at the time that you wouldn't spend too many resources on new armour and focus on weapons instead - where needed, of course, since there's only so many GS or hammers you need, for example :D The "real" game starts after HR after all

Well you could argue that you should spend LR (or first play through in the case of LoP) to learn the mechanics and then utilize those skills in HR (or in new game), but I see your point. And I do enjoy my big ass glaive, but as mentioned I will look into the other weapons in my next play through. There are some pretty nifty looking ones I must admit.

And fought the green swamp monster boss. Loved the design, but first time around I didn't keep an eye on my durability, so my weapon broke mid second phase. I didn't carry a secondary weapon so it impaled me and did unspeakable things to me :( Second time around I got it though!

There definitely are. The boss weapon from the Green Swamp Monster is considered to be one of the best weapons in the game.

Waait, you got him on your second try?! Holy. It took me two days my first time around, I think. I hated its guts. Only now after playing through the game way too many times I'm starting to appreciate the fight. But damn I hated it at first

Yes, that is why I made the post, because I heard from several places that is should be like super punishing and one of the most difficult souls like - which isn’t why I wanted to try it, I just really loved the setting and atmosphere - but I just don’t find it super difficult.

And it’s not like I’m trying to humble brag, I got my ass handed to me in Elden Ring, Sekiro and Demons Souls. So I by no means consider myself a good player at all. Maybe there is just something with the combat that clicks with me in this one.

But I’m not complaining! I am super stoked that I am on the verge of actually finishing a soulslike. I had completely written off the genre.

Okay, now I get it - had already forgotten what your OP was even about at this point :D

Honestly, you can brag about it - nothing wrong with that. It's definitely something to feel proud about, I'd say. As long as you're not being a dick about it, which you very much aren't. Awesome that you feel so at home with this one.

That's awesome too. That's why I'm such a huge advocate for difficulty settings too. If for whatever reason the default difficulty doesn't work for a player, they can lower it and find enjoyment out of the game without being artificially gated from the experience because of some arbitrary difficulty.
