I get where you're coming from, they tend to make up for it by being super cheap.
Aim to buy a year, don't pay more than $15, use as many extra protections as you can that will allow you to not give your credit card number directly to the site/seller. It's been awhile, but I would mostly just use paypal.
And if you hate PayPal, prepaid credit cards do the job also.
I haven't used it but there's also https://www.privacy.com/
