In schools they don't really teach much about it other than the Archduke's assassination and use of mustard gas. Amazing that it took only 20 years after that war for the continent to get embroiled in another one.
The book dissects/illustrates the madness and horrors of the war really well. The parts I found the most interesting was the background and contextual information on why the war happened.
Like you all I ever learned about WWI was about how some Archduke guy getting killed in some exotically named place Serbia set off the firestorm in Europe.
Absolutely and equally amazing was how some of the heroes of WWI (Petain) became the villains of WWII and for the same reasons.
The book is a great “read” I highly recommend it.
