Hey guys, so with Pearson airport's new rules about picking up and dropping of at the curbside, I want to hear how you choose to pickup and drop off your friends, family, or relatives?

For those unaware Pearson airports new fine is a $75 ticket for stopping at the loading and off-loading curbside at Terminals 1 and 3.

From the website:

For loading and offloading, you may stop briefly outside the Arrivals or Departures areas at either terminal. Note, waiting is not permitted.

I'm curious what your thoughts are about the wording as its a little confusing where it says you can't stop or wait, but then says you can stop briefly in the same paragraph.

Edit: Thank you all for the insights, I am picking up my Dad from the airport this Friday, will report how my experience goes with the new rules that the airport put in place.

The way the airport wants you to do it is:

  • Wait at the cellphone waiting lot(s)
  • Once you confirmed your passengers have their bags and are making their way out to the arrivals pick up area via a message, drive there and meet up with your passengers.

If I were to guess, probably no more than one or two minutes without active loading will be allowed. If it's a busy time, guards might shoo you immediately if your passengers aren't there immediately. I usually travel to Pearson with no checked luggage, so I'm there before my ride arrives.

The cell phone waiting lot is such a good thing! Why don’t they monetize it by adding a coffee shop? 🤔

How do you handle any situations where for example the person you might be picking up or dropping off needs help with their bags or has mobility issues?

Do you find you need to bring a partner of friends with you so they can circle the car (as not to stop at the curb) while you help your arriving or departing family or friends?

To answer your questions:

  • If the person needs mobility assistance or help with bags at the airport, an accessibility request needs to be put with the airline.
  • the process for quickly dropping off with a moderately large number of bags, would be to drop the bags off onto the curb while someone grabs carts, load the luggage on, then a quick hug and kiss goodbye and the car goes on their way. Should be no more than 2 minutes and most things happen at the curb so you're not going to get ticketed while that's actively happening. Picking up is this in the reverse order.
  • if you want to give 30 minutes of hugs and kisses hello or goodbye, or have more bags than can fit on one cart per travelling person capable of pushing a cart, you have to park in the short term parking area. What we typically do for international flights from Pearson. Or, have someone designated to drive around or park elsewhere if you don't want to pay.
