The trick is to have five or six stories ready at any given time using PLACEHOLDER1(/2/3/...) for the names. Just a quick find/replace and PLACEHOLDER's your uncle.

If you're prolific maybe? Most people have a pairing they like so I think it was much more
"Oh thank fuck a pairing that's not incestuous I'm going to type the fastest I've ever typed" in the case of Dean/Cas though.
