Well yeah, it's a feedback loop. They target low empathy people and aggressively discourage empathy for those different from them. They promote an easy comfortable kind of hate that people who had once been more empathetic can slip into with encouragement, practice, and stoking.
The easy hate isn't presented as hate. C'mon! Do you want raping, stealing ILLEGALS in your hood?!
My wife's a brown, legal-for-now immigrant. She still thinks they're only rounding up bad guys. Her friends have been back and forth to the Philippines in the past few months, no problem.
I do not wish to frighten her, but I did bring up that something like 72% of those in detention have zero criminal convictions, and they're taking white people as well. If they don't renew her 10-year visa year after next, she'll be a criminal. Ever dealt with immigration officials? They are swamped and struggling, even before Trump 2.0.
In any case, AR-15 leaning on the nightstand, Smith & Wesson .380 EZ on the headboard, pump 12-gauge leaning on my desk and a Colt .45 in drawer, 24x7. Yes, I practice stringent safety. Yes, I practice every week. No, I'm not a paranoid weirdo. Yes, I am prepared to die in a fire fight if masked men come to my door without a warrant. Yes, I've dwelled on that a good bit, not a new thought. Yes, I'm practicing my 2A rights as envisioned by the founders.
That's why the hate is easy. Not many folks were champing at the bit to call themselves nazis in the 90s or 00s. Easy hate is the kind where you can tell yourself you're good for being angry, that the innocent will be fine or don't exist, that you're just protecting your people or being fiscally sensible. Easy hate is the Americans screaming to nuke Afghanistan in 05 who not even 20 years later will act as though the fact that Bush lied to them excuses them. It's the bigot until their kid comes out.
I'm worried for so many people because they don't understand that the system of only targeting "the bad ones" is the system that we had had. This system is looking eerily reminiscent of how Germany explicitly built a system to prevent party members from being able to protect their good jews, because most people had them.
May you never need your last resorts nor experience your worst fears.
Immigration office told my wife not to worry, not to believe what she sees in the news. And I think that was a sincere effort to calm her fears, not party-line bullshit.
No, it's not so bad now, worse than most have seen in recent American history, but not yet Nazi bad. OTOH, I took two years of advanced European history in high school, I see where this is going, couldn't be more plain. Wish I could find that X post where a holocaust scholar said we are already several steps along the way.
