People really forget he was in The 40 Year Old Virgin, which saved his career.
The Office was about to be cancelled after season 1, but then some exec saw 40 Year Old Virgin, and how funny Steve can be, so pushed for The Office to be renewed, and the rest is history.
Imagine how different things would be if The Office never had the chance to become a cult hit.
