The Far Side
Hello fellow Far Side fans!
About this community and how I post the comic strip… Many moons ago, I would ask my Dad to save the newspaper for me everyday so I could read my favorite comic strips and one of those was The Far Side. These days of course you find just about anything online including www.thefarside.com where they post several comics a day and I repost them here. Just to note, the date you see in my posts is not the initial release date, but the date they were posted on the website.
The Far Side is a single-panel comic created by Gary Larson and syndicated by Chronicle Features and then Universal Press Syndicate, which ran from December 31, 1979, to January 1, 1995 (when Larson retired as a cartoonist). Its surrealistic humor is often based on uncomfortable social situations, improbable events, an anthropomorphic view of the world, logical fallacies, impending bizarre disasters, (often twisted) references to proverbs, or the search for meaning in life… Read more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Far_Side

So... Are these comics supposed to be funny?
The joke is that blues music is traditionally associated with poverty, hardship, racism, and social inequality, while the scene is of wealthy white people in their opulant home. The joke is about how out of touch the privileged are.
It helps if you imagie the woman speaking in an upper class british accent, possibly after voicing her opinion about "those dreadful coloured people around the corner."
I think this one is funny. Agree to disagree.
i opened the comments to say this is one of the funniest far sides i've ever seen
when i originally fell in love with the strip as a teenager i wouldn't have gotten this at all
but as a 30-something i think this one has aged like fine wine
Many of them are, many of them aren't. Largely due to the passing of time, jokes that may have been a hit when these were written just aren't funny in today's society.
Alternatively, and also very true, even the greats have bad works. Not every piece will be popular and funny.
In this case... Yeah, I'm not getting it either. Could be a piece about altered expectations. One would expect classy/classical music in a big home like this, blues just wouldn't be "right" in this scenario.
the blues are associated & originated with poor black performers in the american deep south. the name is synonymous with melancholy and misfortune. so you're right about the expectations being subverted but not getting the whole picture which is that a gaudy mansion and well dressed white people are about as far from the traditional trappings of the blues as possible.
you could also further interpret it as a dig at cultural appropriation though i don't think it's meant to go that far.
I wonder if it was intended to be multifaceted where you expect classical in a fancy rich home, but also what do these people have to be blue about?
It’s mildly funny. The latest one, for example, about the Phillips. That cracked me up!
That one is pretty good, and surprisingly I hadn't seen it yet!
He’s not nearly as funny as he was in his prime in the 90s. Lots of them later are just plain not funny although cult followers will play word-twister all day in order to justify it.
