Fundamentally they genuinely think women are so inferior that a successful woman must be a man.
They might not even realize it themselves.
I believe that's a large part of it, however I do think that to be successful in certain fields women are forced to adopt certain social norms usually associated with men.
For example, Elizabeth Holmes dressing like Steve jobs and adopting a deeper voice actually got her foot into a lot of doors. There are so many articles of business men being fooled into investing into an obvious scam just because of how she presented herself.
I think thats the same thing.
Having to present masculinity has the same root cause: the other person doesn't believe that someone presenting feminity is as capable.
