Being able to afford a place with a garden would be pretty cool...
I had a container garden on my 5th floor apartment porch. I can't say that space was cheap, but as long as you have some sunny outdoor space, you can grow stuff.
Some caterpillars infested my parsley and I decided the world needs butterflies more than I needed herbs, so I fed my garden to them and at the end was buying bunches of organic parsley to feed to them. Raisng caterpillars to butterflies was a real emotional and fulfilling experience, and the two that didn't make it will always be in my heart.
You could also look into community gardens. Not as convenient or simple as a home garden, but still pretty nice.
I'm always impressed by the massive community garden right next to a bunch of mid-low density housing whenever I go to a certain park. it's next to some tight old neighbourhoods with detached homes on small lots and townhomes/short apartments. the thing takes up more space than a small park and is clearly maintained and active.
it's nice to see.
