stories about people competing to outdo one another in sneaky, manipulative crap & games

I'd say all Dune books can be summarized like this, so maybe it's just not your kind of story

If you summarize it like that, the lovestory parts are missing. IMO Dune is more about ppl going out of their way for love and loyalty ... and lasguns.
