Unironically, this drive prevents something like 90% of players from seeing some of the best moments in the game and inadvertently actively hampers their enjoyment. I don't only blame the developers though as most player are trained by decades of other RPGs that picking "wacky" dialogue options punishes you.

I think I've seen double digit streamers/Let's Players for example completely miss out on learning about the Pale because "I can't tell Lena I have no clue about Reality in front of Kim!".

And the biggest irony of it is that Kim largely doesn't care, as long as you solve the case thoroughly and don't behave like a complete asshole (by being racist/fascist/misogynistic for example) you will most likely end up having him truly trust you even despite picking a lot of the completely deranged and unhinged dialogue options.

That's something I noticed about my recent apocalyptic cop playthrough. I chose a fitting dialogue option whenever I had the option and Kim always commented it and said that it's deranged, but in the end, he didn't care, really, because I solved the case. He also didn't endorse my taking drugs but didn't do anything about it, ultimately, and just mentioned it passing by at the end of the game.
