Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I live off espresso, weed and nicotine, and then I wonder why I don't always feel good.

I did just buy some nicotine patches to try and quit the last one. Maybe fourth time's the charm?

I just hit a year, wont lie its pretty tough but it does get easier. Just keep trying until you can kick it.

I managed a bit over 2 months without smoking once, I did cold turkey. Got hooked again after a stressful night in the ER where another patient waiting offered me a smoke.

Thanks for the encouragement! EDIT: And congrats on a year!

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I've never been a smoker, but I feel like people should ask "do you smoke" or something first before offering anything. Maybe also there should be some kind of identifying thing to wear that says "I'm trying to quit" so people don't even ask. It's that easy spur-of-the-moment event that causes so many relapses. I'm sure most people have tried to quit and relapsed, so you'd think there'd be some empathy not offering to people so hastily.

[–] PlexSheep 2 points 5 days ago

If you say "I'm trying to quit" instead of "I don't smoke" what are you even doing. Doesn't matter if you used to smoke yesterday.

[–] MycelialMass@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Thanks! Its a process that needs management, it doesnt have an end point unfortunately, its just part of my maitenance like brushing my teeth. You got this! A relapse isnt a failure, its acknowledgment youve been successful to that point, next time youll go even longer without.

Thanks, I appreciate it!

My wife was in the same boat as you, but then she found out she was pregnant and that worked for her. Hopefully she stays off it when the baby’s born.

Looks like you need to get pregnant.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

IIRC that's how my parents quit ages ago. I don't recall if they stopped when my mom got pregnant or when they started trying to get pregnant. Either way, my dad also quit out of solidarity/responsibility at the same time, both cold turkey. Probably having someone else there who can empathize and keep you accountable is a good way to do it. Maybe find a friend who wants to quit too and do it together?

Congratulations (assuming you both wanted it) and godspeed!

I think the pregnancy (if wanted) thing 'helps' in that you'll have strong feelings to protect the developing fetus. Can't guarantee it for all though and it's not a solution, just a possible explanation. Hormones can be wack, yo.

[–] BurntWits@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Thank you! Yes, we’re both very happy. It wasn’t planned but we’re very excited nevertheless.

Yeah I agree. She’s been a different person since being pregnant but in a good way. She’s become very maternal, especially towards our cats. It’s very attractive. Plus she’s obviously very defensive about her belly, especially now that we’re nearing the end.

[–] Taalnazi@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Aww, that's sweet to hear --, howso the last one?

[–] BurntWits@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago

I’m not sure I quite understand your question, but if you’re asking about how she’s defensive over her belly, she’s a hospital nurse and has had to physically restrain patients who were going for her belly. She mostly works with dementia patients and they often times can get aggressive. She’s been punched in the face and breasts and other areas in order to avoid hurting her belly too. Sometimes you don’t have time to restrain someone and have to move to avoid getting hit, and sometimes that hit lands, just somewhere other than where they were aiming.

The idea of it kinda grosses me out, plus I'm usually too busy drinking espresso for gum :P

[–] agentshags@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Fair enough. I know you're not really supposed to drink with it in your mouth but you can kind of chew and park, put it between your gums. It's a little more active way of getting the nicotine and having that oral fixation placated vs the patch. I mean if the patch should work for you, heck, you do you, anything is better than OG cigarettes though

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You could do patch and regular gum together if you want the oral fixation but don't want nicotine gum.

[–] agentshags@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago

That works too, I always liked the burst I got it was more like a cigarette with the gum versus the patch though which is more steady and consistent. Also it kind of feels like snus when I use it I put in my upper lip which I used to use a lot so I don't know, then therr are always those lozenges, I've never tried those but I know someone who switched to them basically, I don't know if they ever actually quit nicotine though but hey it's got to be healthier
