Can is some wild music. I believe they are considered Krautrock.
I never liked the label (I'm German), esp. wrt CAN. I guess many late 60s - 70s bands had a certain flair, a certain Germanness maybe, but overall it was way too diverse to make it a genre.
To convince you, here are two songs:
Outside My Door (1969, Malcolm Mooney)
Moonshake (1973, Damo Suzuki)
The first one reminds me of Pink Floyd, the second reminds me of post-punk. I see your point, the Krautrock label is lazy.
