Does gaining conciousness really happen suddenly for some people? Seems like this should be a gradual process.

Do people really not form long-term memories until as late as three years old?

I have no experience of suddenly gaining conciousness, and I have many memories from before I was three, one as early as 14 months.

From what people write online, some people feel like it happened suddenly. Not sure about their memories. Anyway, i read that it seems like the forgetting of infant memories is an active and deliberate process.
