Last month, a 2023 email written by Dr Eric Descheemaeker to the then head of the Melbourne Law School (MLS) was leaked and posted around the university’s Parkville campus. In the email, in response to the announcement of a cultural safety review at the university, Descheemaeker said MLS was “celebrating the ‘noble savage’” and likened it to an “ideological re-education camp”.

Yikes.

I forgot to re-enable some extensions I have installed that block Google AI Overview so when I went search for the meaning of Descheemaeker the AI Overview gave me this:

The surname "Descheemaeker" is of Dutch origin, meaning "the shoemaker" or "shoe maker". It is a combination of the Dutch word "de", meaning "the", and "scheemaeker", which directly translates to "shoemaker".

But when I follow the link which I thought were the source of this it didn't seem to lead me to anywhere that had this info.

Descheemaeker | Last name meaning The last name Descheemaeker has its origins in the Dutch-speaking regions of Belgium and the Netherlands, particularly associated with the Flanders area. The name is derived from the Middle Dutch word "schaemaker," which translates to "shoemaker," indicating that the original bearers of the name were likely involved in this trade. This occupational surname reflects the historical significance of shoemaking as a vital craft in medieval society, where artisans were essential for providing footwear. Variations of the surname can be found in different forms, such as De Scheemaeker or Descheemaker, which may arise from regional dialects or linguistic adaptations in other countries. The name is less common outside of its Dutch and Belgian roots, but it may appear in various forms in communities with Dutch heritage. Overall, Descheemaeker encapsulates a rich history tied to craftsmanship and regional identity.
