It's a little sad that we need to actually say this, but:

I don't understand the mindset of $3500 for a bike.
Transfer of wealth.
Step 1: You buy.
Step 2: It gets stolen.
Step 3: Repeat.
Of a non E-Bike, no less
For a mountain bike, it means components strong enough and shocks big enough to roll over a melon-sized rock without crashing or going over the bars. Great for lift-operated parks, or singletrack in the backcountry. But yeah, $3500 for a city bike that is not a cargo bike is crazy to me. I'd be worried about it all the time.
Pinion drive bike are just stupid expensive still, it's a fancy and relatively new system. I'd love to have one of these, but couldn't afford to buy one.
In the world of touring bikes, this isn't even close to the most expensive either - check out the Koga World Traveller with Rolhoff hub at almost $7,000.
