I never understood this idea that we always have to have compassion for the dead.
They are dead, while having compassion always has value, there is more value to having compassion for the living.
I’m guessing it’s to comfort the living who fear being hating after they die
I think there's also a degree of picking on someone who can't defend themselves.
Precisely the reason. It’s seen as dishonorable, unsportsmanlike, or a form of cowardice, to attack the defenseless. Some cultures also have a kind of social pact to either speak well or remain silent, but the rule against attacking those who can’t defend is fairly universal.
I think in this case, the solution to both of those issues is: if you dont want to get picked on, dont be a piece of shit people want to pick on
every now and then i'm reminded of the fact that rich people in medieval times would sponsor bridges and build a little prayer cubby next to them so people could pray for their souls
like, can we go back to that maybe? it might be a bit less easy to hate rich people if they paid for bike lanes all over the country..
