Ootl: should I be looking up at this phone and OS combo? I'm not entirely happy with mine, I have a Motorola android.

graphene is a good os. the pixel series i'm coming to believe sucks ass because google refuses to make a device that just fucking works (fastboot sucks). do your own threat analysis, of course, but consider other options in the privacy os space if you're looking to reuse old hardware or a more ethical device company

If your threat model includes:

  • going to protests
  • crossing international boarders
  • interacting with the police

Then GOS is pretty much the only viable option.

Graphene is a privacy focused OS and it only supports Google pixel (as Google pixel allows a relockable bootloader). If you value your privacy it is the best option afaik. I would do a fair bit of research on graphene since unless you're privacy focused then it might be overkill and you'll end up flashing a less restrictive OS onto the phone. Ive had some friends who couldn't stick with it because it was more than what they wanted and caused too much friction
