You mean Scott? He's not managing anything for the EU initiative, he's just promoting it as a volunteer. Is there even any funding involved in the petition?

He did not pursue funding against the better judgements of others because he "didn't know how to handle it". Now this is happening and I'm not surprised. If you get this politically active you pretty much need a lawyer.

He may end up needing a lawyer if he gets targeted by hostile legal action, but that hasn't happened yet. He can always get one later. It doesn't make sense to get a lawyer to manage funds when there are no funds to manage.

Unless he could have built up some legal protection and written proof that he's not accepting any donations for this project, alleviating any future claims that he's accepting money under the table - as they are now.

People taking bad-faith legal action will always be able to make up something to complain about. If you're claiming something that you know is provably false, extra evidence proving it false isn't an obstacle.
