Saw someone mention this elsewhere: we haven't actually signed anyone extra for the men's, all we've done is replace people who've left...
Sterling -> Madueke
Neto -> Kepa
Rapist -> Zubimendi
Jorginho -> Nørgaard
Tomiyasu -> Mosquera soon (or maybe Tierney, if you want someone who's actually played)
They're upgrades, sure, but the amount of depth still feels inadequate. Gyokeres will make that a lot better if we do sign him but honestly I'm starting to think that if we don't sign Eze it's gonna be a bit disappointing as a window. We're still running the same risk of injury.
That's a fair point I hadn't really considered holistically.
I would like us to also bring in Eze or another attacking option. I know we have a number of players and Nwaneri, but we feel light in the attacking mid and Eze could also be a good backup option for that position. I have wondered if other clubs interest in picking off other Palace assets has impacted a potential deal or maybe they are prioritising a striker before looking to make any other additions.
Seems to be some radio silence on the striker front for a few days now, which has me worried. It could be the same sort of silence we saw for the Mosquera deal, but it seems so high profile surely we'd have had something more substantial leaked. I'm also not that tapped into everything on social media to know one way or the other.
There is still time in the window of course, but I feel a little drained over the transfer window already. I'm just looking forward to the football at this point and I think that's also a reason why I'd like to just finally hear that a Gyokeres/striker transfer has been finalised. It's one of the main positions we've been lacking. Anything after that feels like a bonus.
I'm gonna be honest, I'm starting to wonder how good this window is. So far it's been good, but we need more depth. Upgrades are good and all but they're also sort of the minimum.
From a numbers perspective most of our squad depth was okay last season. In that we had multiple players for most positions (excluding striker).
The problem was that Arteta didn't seem to trust most of the alternatives. The deeper problem is that Arteta is the one who brought in most of those alternatives! So he basically didn't trust his own signing for one reason or another, and worked his starting XI into the ground. Injuries played a big part in his selection limitations. But those injuries were exacerbated by players being overplayed.
Arteta really needs to change his outlook when it comes to substitutions and alternative lineups. I think he's getting there, but it's been a bit of an slow process.
The injuries definitely hurt us and the lack of movement in the Jan window feels like they had decided to put off business until the summer. That's also probably also due to Edu leaving and a tough window to get deals done.
It does make me wonder if the experience of Berta has more sway on transfers
Arteta at least seems to have acknowledged that as well in his press conference.
He also said there was plenty of time in the window. So, I guess we'll see. We have at least 2 more signings coming through, which will be 6 total. The benefits of getting business done early :)
I think any Palace transfer will have to wait for their appeal. Europa makes a big difference.
Also a good point I forgot. I really hope they win that. They have a good basis for reinstatement. Bullshit the Redbull clubs don't have an influence or tge CFG have no say over Girona...
Who is named on the board means nothing. The owner of Forest put his shares in a blind trust but was still on the pitch to chastise Nuno.
