They'll defend him no matter what. Even he said he could "stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and [he] wouldn't lose voters". But it's totally not a cult! 🙄

It's because they want to do the same.

If Trump said, "Stand in the middle of 5th avenue and give people free covid shots" his base would turn on him.

Trump is a symptom, not the cause, of the alt-right.
