I agree with the message, though I have seen the phrase "kids these days" used in a broad variety of cases. I wouldn't say every older person using it is wishing the younger ones to suffer

I feel like the most common connotation of "kids these days" is a specific and negative one. It is often accompanied by the phrase "back in my day."

Yes negative but not always about wishing suffering onto youth. Examples: "kids these days have no manners", "kids these days have no respect for xyz", etc.

I agree, it doesn't have to mean they should suffer. I often say something similar when talking about MTX in games, foe example. "Kids these days" accept it as a given and are indoctrinated into liking it. They'll look at skin releases with excitement and look forward to them. Meanwhile I'm over here hating that this is what's become normal and wish we could go back to enjoying playing the game, and sometimes getting cosmetics as rewards for that.
