The organization behind Steam's latest payment processor censorship, Collective Shout, appears to tell some misleading tales.

The original was taken down (see below), archived version: https://archive.is/x5cGQ

Edit: As per Ana Valens, writer of the article, it was taken down by the current owners of Vice.com for transparently bogus reasons. The archived version is now the only one available.

It's a shame these groups take it too far as there is nuance to be found there. A lot of games are nothing but objectification simulators and probably are for the best if they get removed. Meanwhile there's a lot of porn that is exploitative and should be looked into.

It would be great if there was more nuance around this and developers and producers etc started acting more ethically, giving more context to their stuff and there wasn't the trash heap of abusive objectifying contextless porn without consent online.

I do get being angry about that stuff, but maybe they could make their own that is better. After all, things that care about consent like Cute Demon Crashers do exist, we should have more of that.

It's a shame that anti-porn groups are the ones trying to get incest, pedo, rape, torture, extreme-violence-against-women type media banned, while everyone else either doesn't care or is vehemently against censoring this problematic content because freezepeach. I've been against this media forever, especially after reading that this content lowers empathy towards victims and for pedo stuff actually encourage pedos to enact their fantasies in real life. No one cares, except an anti-porn lobbying group. Goddamn. Valve should have banned this problematic junk from the get go, and now we're here because they wanted to be greedy instead.

Victims can't speak up about this or they get shouted down by g*mers - dehumanized, told to kill themselves, told they shouldn't use the internet, threatened with rape, etc. If you've used the steam forums, you may have noticed a lot of hate-filled alt-right assholes on it.

This group is against all porn so they would never make their own with a focus on consent. Even if they did make one, that wouldn't "convert" the people who have these fetishes as long as their fetish material is still available. If these extreme-fetish games were never offered instead, then this group wouldn't have had a leg to stand on. But now I can see steam banning all adult content instead, again.

"Cultivation theory" is a bogus term, also please note that a lot of pseudo-secular rape crisis centers are being operated by the same exact christofascists, that want to ban all porn. The anti-porn people are tactically using more "problematic" fetishes as a wedge-issue. Just like "appropriation of womanhood" is being used as a wedge-issue. Just like "we need an apolitical atheist movement, to appeal to both sides, to normalize atheism on the right, and to dismiss associations with far-left regimes of both present and past" was successfully used as a wedge issue against online atheists.

Perhaps you could tell me why you really want this extreme content on the steam store so I don't misunderstand you, because I am currently extremely unsympathetic towards your comment. I don't see this as atheism vs religion and right vs left. Or that this is supposed to divide whatever your political party is. This is more of how extreme violence towards women and other vulnerable populations have been normalized in media (video games, film, etc.). This content makes me sick to my stomach, I'm not sure if you've seen it but it is extremely graphic and before this month was completely allowed on steam. I wanted steam to put their foot down instead of payment processors. I am relieved these games are being removed, of course my disappointment in valve is unchanged since they didn't care to do this themselves.

Any evidence that the banned games are indeed "incest, pedo, rape, torture, extreme-violence-against-women type media"? I have yet to see it.

[–] YarrMatey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You can either check SteamDB (login with your steam account) or check steam-tracker for delisted games. You can see it is undeniable that an unholy amount of incest games were removed. There are still some rape games I am waiting to be removed. I'm judging by the title alone, but why the fuck was this ever approved? Also PlayMeow Games got a few of their rape games banned. This Google spreadsheet claims to be tracking what was removed. Hope this helps clear up your denial that this happened. Please note I am vehemently against these type of games and cannot be convinced otherwise.

Thank you. I wish this was explained in articles and that journalists did some independent investigation. It's been years since I used Steam.
