Not domesticating them didn't really help. They were imported into Australia for hunting by rich idiots to the detriment of the native wildlife. They are already native to much of the rest of the world so we could probably have pet foxes without too much more damage (and if we ignore all the other issues).
What I was getting at is that fomestication tends to explode a specie's numbers, which is generally to the detriment of the ecosystem's balance. Regardless of them already being native of not.
Imagine boosting the number of eastern brown snakes (assuming you are Australian this would be a good example of a native predator) by a factor 5-10x. All hell would break loose, same as increasing the fox population in most countries they are native to, given how people would likely be inclined to treat them like cats and let them roam even when domestic.
