Technical Death Metal
A community for the technical death metal subgenre. Share and discuss music that melts your face!
Rules:
-
Don't be a dick.
-
Try not to get too bogged down in genre-gatekeeping. Discussing the "tech" credentials of some release/band is fun, but as long as it's oozing viscera, it probably has a place here. Shredbang!
-
Suggested (not enforced) music-posting format, mostly to distinguish band name from album/song title:
Artist - Album Or Song (Location, Year) (ffo: These Bands) (links)
ffo ("for fans of") and added links (e.g. YouTube, Spotify, Bandcamp, Encyclopaedia Metallum) are optional but can make it easier to check out the music you're sharing.
Examples:
- Carnosus - Fermenting Blastospheres of Future Putridity (Sweden, 2023)
- Job For A Cowboy - Sun Eater (USA-AZ, 2014) (ffo: All Shall Perish, Wretched) (yt, s, bc, em)

It's hard to think of these kinds of perfect guitarists, and especially dig out their solos that get up that level.
Pretty much all of the following are in bands with equally talented musicians, but we're talking about guitar players.
My other SUPER favourite Jason Schimmel has it across some solos, but the most impressive one would be Estradasphere : The Return (this is a duet with Kevin Kmetz, but the solos from The Silent Elk of Yesterday show his metal side and D flat Hell show his phrasing and incredible skill in a non metal context. He does a shitload of different genres and plays various instruments with secret chiefs 3 as well.
I'm going over my music collection and trying to dig up surprise hits. Tosin Abasi didn't make it π’ I probably won't spill as much ink (electrons?) as with Mike or Jason.
Simon Girard/Kevin ChartrΓ©, Beyond creation : The Axiom https://youtu.be/M8uv6husUqk?t=83
Ron "Fucking Invented Prog Metal" Jarzombek. Here he is with Blotted Science Synaptic Plasticity The most underrated guitar player in existence based on how fucking influential he is. Watchtower alongside Queensryche (I never listen to them) and Dream Theater (the big dawgs) set the foundation of progressive metal (if you don't count Robert Fripp) and Ron is basically the Lips of Prog Metal, holding down school gigs and cover bands in San Antonio. The man has incredible speed, phrasing, originality, and LONGEVITY out the ass, Watchtower is still working on mathematics, he's still trying to make new albums and songs in god knows what capacity and failing to sell them, but even in twenty, twenty, fucking five, he sounds like a modern player.
Gabriel Marin , Consider the source : Someone who gives Trey Spruance and Jason Schimmel a run for their money, Gabriel , like David Fiuczynski wields the fretless/fretted double neck and takes inspiration from all over the world. He has a LOT of melodic solos which he does wonderfully, but he doesn't lack in the speed department and can play with wild abadon and impressive dynamics Aquarians
A really obvious one, Paul Masvidal of Cynic. Played in Death and Cynic. Integral birth
Another obv, Frederik Thordental (sp?) Meshuggah, Combustion : https://youtu.be/RL7RFrInBww?t=162
Sorry Martin. Maybe this is your solo... next time compose sol niger within :P
Rafael Trujillo/Steffen Kummerer : Obscura : Mortification of the Vulgar Sun (honerable mention to Linus Klausenitzer for making me buy a fretless bass[with help from Sean Malone]) https://youtu.be/41Uu1qlVGz8?t=269
Guthrie Govan : Amazing player. One of those that, despite being in fucking ASIA has his best work done with The Aristocats, who ended up forming because they were all booked to give clinics at the same event. Like Tony Levin (before KC) was known as a session guy. This solo has a gap in it. https://youtu.be/nB7NzdAWJ50?t=134
Honorable mentions with no clear evidence : Wanzwa, Sleep Terror, Thank you scientist, And so I watch you from afar, Kevin Hufnagel/Dysrhythmia/Gorguts/Luc Lemay, Necrophagist, Voivod
Some people ya just don't have to mention : Robert Fripp/King Crimson, Mahavisnu orchestra (sp?), Rush, etc
Pardon me while I deep dive. π€©π€πΌ
thanks, I took a bunch of time to do compile that list :)
Rest assured, it will inspire a much longer time to fully digest it, by an order of magnitude. ππΌββοΈπ₯
