Portcullis is one of my favourite words. You can probably knock on them, but I'd think that shouting is more likely to get the guards' attention. Looking at the lore page, I kinda wonder how an underwater civilisation would handle knocking on doors because knocking on stuff underwater is more difficult and quieter.
