TLDR: AA had been flying a 787-8 to Naples but decided to switch to the 787-9. Mid flight someone realized that Naples can’t accommodate the larger 787-9, and the flight was diverted to Rome.

Edit: It’s speculated it’s because for the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (RFFS) the 787-8 is a category 8 aircraft, and the 787-9 is a category 9 aircraft. Naples is not rated for category 9.
