Because it's using people the plural to refer to a singular person?

No, because (to me) it implies that Trump isn’t a person.

Ah. English does allow for that interpretation. But it's more problematic than doing a plural for singular substitution. Echos of dehumanization that allows for atrocities. My intent was way less problematic.
