If you want a fantasy series that is even better and has awesome discussion of gender check out Discworld.

Cheery is one of my favourite characters in Discworld. The Watch sub-series is my favourite in general.

I'm rereading discworld now, and it's hard to decide between the witches, wizards, watch, and death, but I think I agree with you. The watch is such a good series.
